Greer South Carolina History
The South Carolina Ports Authority today announced a strong container handling record for April, including Greer's inland port. On Monday, it reported that container volume at the state's largest port, the Inland Port of Greers, totaled 9,180 last month. In the first month of the year and the second consecutive month with a record number of container shipments in April, in addition to last year's record total of 8,921, according to the Port Authority. The Inlander Port in Greering had the highest April volume in its history with an average of 1.5 million containers.
The city of Greer has grown dramatically in recent years, adding 22,000 people to its 1.5 million inhabitants over the past decade. The city is also home to South Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The city is also home to the country's second largest university, with more than 1,500 students.

The Greer Depot was built in 1913 for the Piedmontese Northern Railway and is one of three depots still standing in Greer.
