The great Adventure # 2 Benton MacKaye Trail Sections 2 - ??
We are off to find the great outdoors that awaits this amazing 7-9 days of backpacking. Destination is being pondered even as I type. Will be amazing, fantastic and absolutely a blast. So put in your leave, get your gear in place and let's go. We will be starting this from Three Forks. If you would like to start a day earlier you could do the loop from Section 2 to the top of Springer Mountain on the AT and then come back on the BMT. Benton MacKaye was the man who conceived the idea of the AT and the BMT is part of his original design. This is a wilder and more natural trail than over used AT. www.bmta.org I would also recommend a copy of Hiking the Benton MacKaye. This is much more of a wilderness backpack, than it would be on the AT. Each member should bring at least the 5 gallon size pail of BEAR OFF (Just Kidding) Running from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Davenport Gap on the northern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (the Smokies), the BMT passes through some of the most remote backcountry in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina, including eight federally designated Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas. For further information on the trail, visit the BMT Vital Info page. http://www.bmta.org/BMTVitalInfo.htm http://www.georgiawildlife.com/node/1390
